German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mexican President Peña Nieto set the tone on day one of the HANNOVER MESSE/CeMAT double-header. Asked to shake hands with a robot, they both went for the more casual fist bump – a symbol for the relaxed, natural interaction of humans with digitization, robots and machine learning.▲ Man, machine and fist bumps"Technology is not about competing with us humans; it's about assisting us. That is the core message conveyed by this trade fair, which has again underscored Hannover's reputation as a global hotspot for the digital transformation of industry," said Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board at Deutsche Messe, at the close of HANNOVER MESSE and CeMAT. "The focus here has clearly been on the human element: We're the ones making the decisions and setting the course. The interaction of humans with machines and IT adds up to a huge competitive gain across manufacturing, logistics and the energy industry."Under the motto of "Integrated Industry – Connect & Collaborate", a total of 210,000 visitors seized the opportunity to explore the innovations on display. A total of 5 800 exhibitors were present at HANNOVER MESSE & CeMAT. Topics like machine learning, artificial intelligence, industrial IT platforms, the expansion of power grids for eMobility, the use of robots and autonomous systems in production and intralogistics, and the role of workers in the integrated factory were the subject of intense debate at the stands of exhibitors at the event. As the official Partner Country, Mexico profiled itself as an innovative business partner and industrial location."Businesses have successfully negotiated the first steps on the path towards digitized, connected production and are now firing up for the second stage of the journey," reported Thilo Brodtmann, Executive Director of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). "New platform-based business models, the use of digital twins and initial experiences with machine learning – all of this is set to play an increasingly important role in the mechanical engineering sector. Hannover Messe is a place where people present and discuss the shape of things to come, and we are once again highly satisfied with the outcome of the show," he continued. The VDMA believed that automation, software and intralogistics would continue to define the character of HANNOVER MESSE, he said."HANNOVER MESSE has once again confirmed it is the definitive home base for the global transition to Industry 4.0. Extended value creation networks, new forms of human-machine collaboration, and the increasing integration of artificial intelligence into production operations: These remain the key features of digitization and connectivity, and were once again first unveiled here in Hannover. All of this requires even more connectivity, which is why the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) has been calling for an industry-capable 5G network right from the start," said ZVEI Executive Director Dr. Klaus Mittelbach. "This trade show has conveyed two other key messages. First, that we can only advance down the road to technological progress and social prosperity by teaming up and working together – not by protectionism or isolation. And second, that bringing young students into direct contact with technology – as we have done at this event – is a great way to kindle their interest. And we have to do even more to attract their attention, for they represent tomorrow's urgently needed workforce."Out of a total of 210 000 visitors at the fair, more than 70,000 of them came from abroad, for an international share of 30 percent. China headed the foreign visitor statistics with a total of 6,500, followed by the Netherlands (5,300), Poland (2,700) and the United States (1,700). A total of 1,400 visitors attended from Mexico, which was this year's featured Partner Country.Central trends highlighted at Hannover this year included the ongoing convergence between IT and mechanical engineering, industrial IT platforms and other new business models, and the imminent impact of artificial intelligence on the factory environment. The exhibitors in the automation halls profiled drive technology and fluid power as a key driver of digitized and integrated manufacturing. The close integration of production and logistics was a key topic in the CeMAT halls – unsurprisingly, since the digital factory simply cannot work without intelligent logistics systems. Product highlights included industrial trucks, autonomous shuttles, order-picking robots and complete systems.Further highlights consisted of assistance systems like exoskeletons, AR goggles, and above all robots. Agile fabrication and intralogistics rely on autonomous transport systems, drones and intelligent personal assistants (IPAs). The trend towards human/machine collaboration continues unabated.Meanwhile, displays in the energy-related halls centered on energy efficiency in direct correlation with climate protection. The focus was on decentralized, smart energy systems and infrastructure solutions for the environmentally friendly mobility of the future.Impressive innovative performance was also demonstrated by subcontractors and development partners, who revealed approaches to connecting operations with customers for seamless efficiency. Multi-material and lightweight concept design are opening the way to a complete rethinking of structural components, resulting not just in cost-cutting and greater efficiency, but also improved performance.More than 160 Mexican businesses were at the fair to present their products and innovations. German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto agreed that progress and prosperity could only be achieved via open markets. Mexico's participation therefore fit perfectly into the context of the international free trade agreement concluded last Saturday between Mexico and the European Union, with 99% of goods between both parties to be traded in future free of tariffs. The next HANNOVER MESSE will be staged from 1 to 5 April 2019, with Sweden as the official Partner Country. The next CeMAT will run parallel to HANNOVER MESSE from 20 to 24 April 2020.

The New Era of Packaging Packaging, one of the main application areas of plastics, has recently undergone drastic changes. On one hand, the growing spending power of the middle class has been pushing packaging towards the high end of being intelligent and personalized. On the other hand, as we enter the era of "new retail", product delivery has been gaining popularity, leading to the expansion of the packaging market. Functionally speaking, innovations in packaging are geared towards extending the shelf lives of products, reducing food wastes, and improving product safety. At the same time, packaging is becoming a multi-purpose carrier integrating marketing, product management, and big data analysis. However, the industry is still being challenged by risingraw material prices and other costs, as well as pressure from environmental issues. To swim with the tide is the key to survival. But how? Answers are to be found at CHINAPLAS 2018, the Asia's no. 1 plastics and rubber trade fair, replete with cutting edge solutions from around the world, featuring the latest materials, equipment and technology, providing a "high-speed train" for businesses to join the bandwagon. Packaging "slimming" is in full gear Reducing resource consumption and packaging-waste at the source is not exactly a new idea, and "lightweighting" has been gathering momentum in recent years. Enterprises with leading technologies are already on the move, like Nestle. They have reduced the weight of their mineral water bottles by 30% - 45%, help saving the environment. Ingeo-based Earthfirst ®UL, to be displayed by NATUREWORKS LLC at CHINAPLAS 2018, is an outstanding sealant with proven mechanic properties and performance. EarthFirst ®ULUL is ideal for food packaging applications like disposable pillow pouches, small coffee packets, gusseted stand-up pouches, frozen foods and multi-wall bags. EarthFirst ®ULUL forms superior seals at lower initial sealing temperatures. EarthFirst ®ULUL has great aroma barrier, grease-resistant attributes. Taizhou Huangyan Fow Mould Co., Ltd. will showcase IML box mould /thin-wall mould at CHINAPLAS 2018. Fow Mould can be used to make various kinds of bucket mould, and of every size - from 50ml to 2L, in every shape - square container, round container, oval container, for every application - ice cream, cheese, chocolate, fast food and so on. The thin-wall mould can reduce packaging weight. A bright future for biodegradable plastics Biodegradability is a rising star in packaging. On February 7, 2018, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of the PR China released a new version of the "Packings for Express Service" series of national standards and made it clear for the first time that courier packaging should make use of biodegradable plastics. According to statistics, the courier industry in China used about 14.7 billion plastic bags in 2016. It is an inevitable step to take to resolve the conflict between packaging and the environment and accelerate the pace to adopt green, biodegradable materials and technology. PHA bio-based fully biodegradable polymers from Sogreen Technology Co., Ltd. can be decomposed by microorganisms within 3-6 months. The polymers can substitute 50% plastics. It can be used for the production of disposable products, such as mulch films, plastic bags, and foam lunch boxes. Zhejiang Hisun Biomaterials Co., Ltd.’s REVODE Polylactide Resin is made from 100% renewable resources. REVODE is an environmentally-friendly material, produced with low carbon-emission methods. Products made of REVODE are 100% biodegradable. It is widely used in disposable tableware and packaging bags. Visitors can find out more about this resin at CHINAPLAS 2018. What is the appeal of multifunctional packaging? It has been derived that the amount of food wasted in Asia every year due to packaging problems is enough to feed more than a hundred million people. Common cause of such wastes is rotting or the growth of mould within shelf life. Is there a way to improve and use suitable materials to ensure or even extend shelf lives? The development of multifunctional materials with good barrier properties and are heat-resistant, UV-resistant, antimicrobial, permeable yet oxygen-blocking, can be an answer. Multi-layer flexible packaging films require specialty barrier extrusion lines. Films produced by Hosokawa Alpine Aktiengesellschaft - Film Extrusion Division prevent the infiltration of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor. They also preserve the aromas and flavors of the finished product. It is recommended to use on 7-, 9- or 11- layer lines - the more layers the more options for users to engineer and tailor their film products while saving raw material costs. The Hong Kong Polymer Science Ltd. will introduce CVI additive masterbatch and compounding solutions for food packaging and container applications to visitors. This exhibitor provides a full range of transparent compounds and additive masterbatches for PE, PP, and PA - solutions for the production of multilayer high barrier films, solvent-free lamination films, cast PE film, transparent containers for food and water, etc. Don't manufacture harder but smarter The structural shortage of labor has caused a surge in manufacturing costs, but the "Made in China 2025" strategy provides a solution - smart manufacturing. The digital intelligent printing factory FOE-CI350 satellite EB drying printing machine to be displayed by Shaanxi Beiren Printing Machinery Co., Ltd. provides real-time feedback and resource management according to data. The exhibit shortens delivery time by 20% to 25%, saves labor costs by 15% to 20%, saves capital costs by 20%  to 30% and reduces material costs by 10% to 20%. Han King Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd. will introduce a 3-layer FFS heavy duty bag coextrusion line which connects to an internal embossing device and a 4-color printing machine. It is suitable for producing bags used for packing resin materials, cereals, fodders, seeds and so on. It helps saving energy and takes only a short time to set up for mass production. The maximum output can be up to 350kg/hr. Its one-stop design - from blown film, surface treating, printing, embossing to final rewinding - helps reduce space and related costs effectively. Guangzhou Jeepine Intelligent Compression Molding Machine Co., Ltd. will showcase a high speed 48 cavities cap compression molding machine. Capacity can reach 1,500 - 1,875 pcs/hr. With the addition of measuring pump, caps weight precision can be ensured. Output efficiency is 50% higher and energy consumption is 50% lower compared to injection molding machines. A sneak peek at the concurrent events A number of events targeted to the packaging industry will be organized during the trade fair to enhance technology exchange. At the "3rd Industry 4.0 Conference", practical cases of 4.0 factories will be discussed, and ways to optimize automated manufacturing and improve the efficiency of product assembly and workflow will be explained. Automotive Industry's Door to Lightweight & GreenThe world is shifting into high gear on sustainability. China, one of the major manufacturing countries of cars, has put emphasis on the development of energy-saving and new energy automobiles in its "Made in China 2025" strategy. According to a report in January 2018 by the China Association of Automobile Manufactures, production of new energy automobiles in 2017 amounted to 794 thousand, a year-on-year growth of 53.8%. "Innovation is Key to the Future", theme of CHINAPLAS 2018, is architected around to call for electric, lightweight and intelligent vehicles. The show will be replete with high-tech, energy-saving and environmentally friendly solutions for automotive industry by more than 1,500 exhibitors. The future is lightweight and energy-saving Polymer-based composites, thanks to their lightness, strength, moldability, elasticity, corrosion resistance and weatherability, play an important role in producing lightweight vehicles. Reduction in weight, a crucial factor of new energy autos, calls for the use of composites, employing which in the making of structural parts and coverings can reduce weights by about 30%. Beijing Tiangang Auxiliary Co., Ltd. will introduce new applications of the "Targeted Nano Enhancement Technology" at CHINAPLAS 2018 for the automotive industry to achieve thin-wall and lightweight goals. The technology makes use of the special targeted release and enhancement of high performance nano particles and facilitates the nano dispersion of functional additives in polymer composites, improving a number of properties, such as higher crystallization, better mechanical properties, melt flows, processing properties and lower VOC. DSM is a CHINAPLAS veteran and this year DSM's Stanyl® HGR2 PA46 resin will be displayed. DSM's Stanyl® HGR2 PA46 resin is powered by a 5.0L V8 engine as a drop-in replacement for PA66, providing enhanced wear and friction performance. Environmental benefits include reductions in gas consumption and green-house gas emissions. The resin has already been used in chain tensioner arms in the Ford F-150 and Mustang, and will be utilized on more vehicles beginning in 2018. In order to achieve "green" automotive manufacturing, apart from using lightweight and higher performance alternative materials, new equipment and new processing technology do accelerate the development of automotive lightweighting and energy saving. The EC-SXII series of all-electric injection molding machines from Shanghai Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. is equipped with more advanced injection capability compared to the previous EC-SX series. The machines are expected to better meet customer needs for precision molding and higher productivity. The series is able to adapt from thin-wall to thick-wall molding, offering greater flexibility to users. MuCell injection is an innovation of precision injection molding technology, which significantly reduces the weight of the parts and shortens molding cycle, improving the buckling deformation of parts and dimensional stability. In recent years, with the development of automotive lightweighting, MuCell is widely used in the automotive industry. The Mucell instrument panel mould of Zhejiang Kaihua Moulds Co., Ltd. takes injection molding production to a new level of automation, enhancing productivity. Green and beautiful, it's irresistible Elegant appearance and high-class feeling are what make a car appeal to consumers. To this end, spray-free materials have been among the favourites. They are colourful, glossy, corrosion and scratch resistant, recyclable, low costs and answers well to aesthetic needs. Covestro Polymers (China) Co., Ltd. will showcase its high-performance, coat-free grade auto interior material, Covestro Makroblend® SR60.
